Solution:

Excess means above , or more than.

In the question  , -3 exceed -5 , to get the answer of that , we need to just subtract the second term (here -5) from the first term ( here -3).

So, you need to simply subtract -5 from -3

       -3-(-5)=2 ---[ans]

or , in the other words,

The number that when we added to -5 produce the number -3 is being found as the following:

    Answer  -3-(-5)=2

Hence -3 exceeds -5 by 2
