Given,

Number 1 = 4

Number 2 = -16

To find ,

By how much does no. 1 exceeds no. 2

Solution :

Difference b/w no. 1 & no.2 = no. 1- no.2

 = 4 - ( - 16)

Open the brackets :

The sign of term inside the bracket will change as there is -ve sign before the brackets

 = 4 + 16

 = 20

So , no. 1 i.e 4 is 20 units ahead of no.2 i.e -16 on the number line.
