Given :-

By selling 40 pens, a shopkeeper suffers a loss equal to the SP of 5 pens.

To find :-

The loss percentage of the shopkeeper .

Solution :-

Let the Selling Price of a pen be Rs. X

The Selling Price of 40 pens = Rs. 40X

Given that

The Loss = The Selling Price of 5 pens = Rs.5X

We know that

Loss = Cost Price - Selling Price

=> 5X = Cost Price - 40 X

=> Cost Price = 5X+40X

=> Cost Price = Rs. 45X

Now,

We know that

Loss Percentage = (Loss/CP)×100

=> L% = (5X/45X)×100

=> L% = (1/9)×100

=> L% = 100/9

=> L% = 9 1/9 or 9.11

Answer :-

The Loss percentage of the shopkeeper is 100/9% or 9 1/9 % or 9.11%

Used formulae:-

Loss = Cost Price - Selling Price

Loss Percentage = (Loss/CP)×100
