Question:

By selling a Refrigerator for Rs. 14,000 a man suffered a loss of 20%. What was the cost price of the Refrigerator?

Answer:

The cost price of the refrigerator was Rs. 17500.

Given:

Selling price(S.P.) of the refrigerator is Rs. 14000.

Loss = 20%.

To find:

The cost price(C.P.) of the refrigerator.

Explanation:

Let, the C.P. of the refrigerator be, 'n'.

∴ Loss = (n×20/100)

             = \frac{n}{5}

∴ S.P. = (n-\frac{n}{5})

         = (\frac{5n-n}{5}) [∵ The L.C.M. of the denominators is 5.]

        = \frac{4n}{5}

According to the problem:

\frac{4n}{5} = 14000

⇒ 4n = (14000×5)

⇒ 4n = 70000

⇒ n = (70000÷4)

⇒ n = Rs. 17500

∴ The C.P. of the refrigerator was Rs. 17500.
