The British economically exploited traders and craftsmen of India by introducing high taxes on their textiles and as the Indians had small scale industries the people were running out of money due to drain of wealth from India which involved the exporting of raw materials like cotton at low rates and importing of British clothes at a high rate caused the decay of the cottage industries and handicrafts as they couldn't compete with British clothes in terms of quality .
