Ammonium hydroxide when added to copper sulphate drop-wise forms a pale blue ppt. of copper hydroxide which dissolves in excess of ammonium hydroxide to form a deep blue solution of tetrammine copper sulphate.

Add a solution of NaOH to each. Ca(OH)2 is insoluble (white ppt) and will remain insoluble with XS OH-. On the other hand, addn of OH- to Zn2+ will give initially Zn(OH)2 (also a white ppt) but on further addition of OH- it will redissolve to yield the zincate ion: [Zn(OH)4]2-. Zn(OH)2 is said to be amphoteric.
