Answer:

It means that the people of India have gifted themselves this constitution, and not a monarch, dictator, political party, foreign nation or any other entity like God(Yes!! Some constitutions and monarchies legitimize their power from God Constitutional references to God - Wikipedia).

The above point is very important because this provides a moral stability to the constitution. Else some people would have claimed that Indian Constitution has been gifted to us by the British Empire/Monarchy as a parting gift.

Across the world dictators, military and political parties usurp power, make a constitution and enforce this on the people. This tyranny is what makes people revolt against them and sooner or later. Such tyrannical dictators and “private” constitutions are hanged and burnt on the streets, as the people never consented or participated to make the Constitution.

The people of India participated in drafting of the Constitution, then adopting it on 26th November, 1949 in Parliament and came into force i.e. enacted on 26th January, 1950 and gave it to themselves (including all future citizens of India- else I could have said I was not even born in 1950 and never no one asked for my consent).

The Indian Constitution derives its power from the people of India and hence a legitimate means to govern the nation since Indian citizens have willingly accepted this basic set of rules for the India, that is Bharat.
