Question :-

In a SONAR, ultrasonic waves are sent in to the sea water and reflected waves from a sunken ship are received after 2 sec. If the velocity of waves in sea water is 1450 m/s. Find the depth of the sunken ship.

Answer :-

Given :-

  • Time taken by the reflected rays to reach back the SONAR = 2s

  • Speed (or velocity) of waves = 1450 m/s

To find :-

  • Depth of the sunken ship

Solution :-

We know that,

\boxed{Speed=\frac{Distance}{Time}}

After substituting the values, we get the formula as,

\boxed{Distance=Speed\times{Time}}

Now,

Distance = 1450 × 2

 \Rightarrow Distance = 2900 meters

or 2.9 km (as 1000 m = 1 km)

 \therefore The depth of the ship was 2900 m
