My response deals exclusively with the uses aboard ships, specifically merchant ships. Main and auxiliary engines generally need to be cooled by fresh water, but how is that water cooled? The answer is by seawater, which is sucked out of the seabays, run through a cooler and returned whence it came. The fresh water, cooled dramatically by the seawater, is ready for another go at its main job.

There is a constant demand for fresh water on board, and the only way to deal with it practically is to make it from seawater, by evaporation or reverse osmosis. Once the water on the seawater side of the

A lot of fish like it. And crabs and whales and plankton. It also absorbs a LOT of CO2, which reacts with dissolved calcium to form reefs and shells. It also has a massive amount of surface area that fresh water evaporates from and then falls as rain (that’s important). Also, the currents move heat to northern latitudes (see Gulf Stream) which keeps Britain toasty instead of icy. The extra salt increases the relative buoyancy, which lowers shipping costs somewhat. Of course being flat also lowers shipping costs. It’s also cheap so it can be used for cooling water if your facility is nearby. And when excessive heat builds up, hurricanes are the ultimate swamp cooler, since evaporating trillions of tons of water lowers the temperature significantly.
