The first question that Vera asked Nuttel was, “Do you know any people around here? She asked this question to make sure how much knowledge Mr. Nuttel had about the people over there so that she could fabricate a story of her own.

"Do you know many of the people round here?" is intended to find out if Nuttel had spoken to her aunt or any other family member. Naturally, if he'd have already spoken to Vera's aunt, she wouldn't be able to weave her fake story about the great tragedy befallen on the family.
