Answer: to calm themselves

Explanation:

Mahatma Gandhi and one of his relative developed a sudden the urge   of smoking. Gandhiji`s uncle had the habit of smoking which inspired him and his relative to have a go. They had no money to buy so they started collecting the stumps of cigarettes thrown his uncle.

They soon began stealing coppers from the pocket of servant to buy Indian cigarettes as the stumps of cigarettes thrown by his uncle did not bring much pleasure to them. They wanted to keep away the cigarettes from the eyes of the elders. They soon started getting disgusted as they had to seek permission from elders before doing something. This led to a feeling among them to commit suicide.

To execute their plan of committing suicide they went off to the jungle in search of  Dhatura seeds , which they heard contained poison. They then visited Kedarji Mandir and after offering their prayers looked for a lonely corner to consume the seeds.

They swallowed few seeds after much hesitation but it did not do much harm to them. They were embarrassed by their act and thought of visiting Ramji Mandir to calm themselves and get over the thought of suicide.

Hope this helps.
