It is because due to resonanve bond between C6H5 (BENZENE) and O (OXYGEN) is very strong so a lot of force is required to break it. Thus O remains with benzene and oxygen becomes neutral on rxn with H. On the other side C2H5OH is formed when OH- attacks on C2H5+.
