आंदोलन की शुरुआत उत्तराखंड के चमोली जिले से हुई थी। उस समय उत्तर प्रदेश में पड़ने वाली अलकनंदा घाटी के मंडल गांव में लोगों ने यह आंदोलन शुरू किया। 1973 में वन विभाग के ठेकेदारों ने जंगलों के पेड़ों की कटाई शुरू कर दी थी। वनों को इस तरह कटते देख किसानों ने बड़ी संख्या में इसका विरोध किया और चिपको आंदोलन की शुरुआत हुई।
