Given the starting conditions, we presume that a 4⋅g mass of sodium hydroxide is dissolved in a 100⋅mL volume of water....and such a dissolution would involve MINIMAL change to the volume.... And the given definition of molarity=moles of solute (mol)volume of solution (L) ...and thus units of mol⋅L−1 .

Answer:

Molarity = Number of moles / Amount of solution ( In liters)

NaOH molar mass = 23 + 16 + 1 = 40 g

=> Number of moles in 4 g = 4 g / 40 g = 0.1 mole

Amount of water = 0.5 liters

Molarity = 0.1 Mole / 0.5 Litres

=> Molarity = 0.2 M
