Percentage means "out of 100".
To calculate percentage of something, you have to how much you have out of something. And multiply it by 100

For example:
1. let's say you got 18 marks out of 20. How much percentage of marks did you get?
You got 18, out of 20. So you got $\frac{18}{20}$.
% of marks = $\frac{18}{20} \times 100=90$ %

2. Similarly, If you get 120 marks out of 150, then % of marks you got is
$\frac{120}{150} \times 100=80$ %

3. Let the price of an object increased from Rs. 1000 to Rs. 1050. You have to calculate the percentage increase in price. 
Increase in price = 1050 - 1000 = 50
Rs. 50 increased in Rs. 1000
% increase = $\frac{50}{1000} \times 100 = 5$%
