Given :

Two equal charges having equal magnitude of 3×10‾⁶ C are separated by a distance of 2000A°.

To Find :

Potential energy of the system.

Solution :

❖ Electric potential energy is a scalar quantity. While finding its value, the value of various charges must be substituted with their proper sign.

Potential energy of the system of two point charges is given by

\dag\:\underline{\boxed{\bf{\pink{U=\dfrac{kq_1q_2}{r}}}}}

» k denotes constant

» r denotes distance b/w both charges

For dipole,

  • q₁ = 3 × 10‾⁶ C
  • q₂ = -3 × 10‾⁶ C

By substituting the given values;

\sf:\implies\:U=\dfrac{(9\times 10^9)(3\times10^{-6})(-3\times10^{-6})}{2000\times10^{-10}}

\sf:\implies\:U=\dfrac{-81\times10^{-3}}{2\times10^{-7}}

\sf:\implies\:U=-40.5\times10^{-3+7}

:\implies\:\underline{\boxed{\bf{\gray{U=-40.5\times10^{4}\:J}}}}
