Calculate the acceleration due to gravity at the surface of Mars if its diameter is 6760 km and mass one tenth that of the earth by assuming that the diameter of earth is 12742 km and acceleration due to gravity on the earth is 9.8 m/s².

Given :

diameter of  mars =d=6760 km

Radius=R=d/2=6760/2=3380km=3380x1000m =338x 10⁴m

G=gravitational constant=6.67x 10⁻¹¹Nm²/Kg²

Mass of mars=1/10 of earth mass =1/10x 6x 10²⁴kg=6x10²³kg

Formula :

g=GM/R²

=[6.67x 10⁻¹¹ x6x10²³]/338x338x10⁸
=40.02x10¹²/108 x 338 x338
=3.46 m/s²

∴ Acceleration due to gravity on mars=3.46 m/s²
