calculate the horsepower of the motor of an elevator ,which can carry 10 persons of an average mass of 60 kg ,through a vertical height of 20 m in 30 seconds . ( take g =10N/kg)

the total mass lifted =10*60=600kg
height =20m
g=10N/kg
so work done
= potential energy at the highest point
=mgh
=600*10*20=120000J
power = work done /time=120000/30=4000W
we know 1Hp=736W
so 4000W=5.36Hp
