we have to calculate mole fraction of methane where it is given that 34% of methane is dissolved in benzene.

means, in 100g of methane - benzene solution, methane contains 34g while benzene contains (100 - 34) = 66g

we know,

  • molar mass of methane = 16g/mol
  • molar mass of benzene = 78 g/mol

so, no of moles of methane = weight /molar weight = 34/16 = 2.125

no of moles of benzene = weight/molar weight of benzene = (100 - 34)/78 = 66/78 ≈ 0.846

no mole fraction of methane = no of moles of methane /(no of moles of methane + no of moles of benzene)

= 2.125/(2.125 + 0.846)

≈ 0.715
