Explanation:

Given Calculate the momentum of a 110-kg football player running at 8.0 m/s.Compare the player’s momentum with the momentum of a hard-thrown 0.410-kg.  football that has a speed of 25.0 m/s.

  • We need to find the magnitude of the momentum.
  • So we have ρ = mv
  • Now to find the momentum of the player we have mass of player and speed
  • So ρ player = 110 kg x 8 m/s
  •                    = 880 kg – m/s
  • Now to find the momentum of the ball we have mass of ball and speed
  •    So ρ ball = 0.410 kg x 25 m/s
  •                    = 10.25 kg-m/s
  • Now comparing the player’s momentum to that of the ball we get
  • So ρ player / ρ ball = 880 / 10.25
  •                                  = 85.85
  • So the momentum of the player is greater than the momentum of the ball.
  • So if the player catches the ball the motion of the player is slightly affected.
