the number of unit cells is 1.0038 × 10²³.

Given : 24g Mg crystallises in hexagonal closed packed lattice.

To find : The number of unit cells.

solution : given weight of Mg = 24 g

atomic weight of Mg = 24 g/mol

so, no of moles of Mg = 24/24 = 1 mol

now no of atoms of Mg in 24 g = no of moles of Mg × Avogadro's number

= 1 × 6.023 × 10²³

= 6.023 × 10²³

as Mg crystallises in hexagonal closed packed lattice.

we know, no of atoms per unit cell of hcp = 6

so, no of unit cells = no of atoms in 24g Mg/no of atoms in a unit cell

= 6.023 × 10²³/6

= 1.0038 × 10²³

Therefore the number of unit cells is 1.0038 × 10²³.
