Let us assume that the oxidation number of P is x.

Note:
♦The oxidation number of a molecule or compound is always zero.

♦The oxidation number of H is +1.

♦The oxidation number of O is always -2.

So now let's find out the value of x in PH3

Here,
x+ 3(+1) = 0

x + 3 = 0

x = -3

So in PH3 the oxidation number of P is –3.

In H3PO4,

3(+1) + x + 4(-2) = 0

3 + x - 8 = 0

x - 5 = 0

x = +5

So the oxidation number of P in H3PO4 is +5
