Given:

He buys at a discount of 10%

He pays an import fee of 5% to bring the goods in.

He pays for other expenses which amount to 20% of the land cost.

He wants to make a profit of 15%.

To Find:

The percentage markup of the selling price from the list price

Solution

Define x:

Let x be the list price of the goods

Find the cost price after the discount:

Discount = 10%

Price after discount = (1 - 0.1)x

Price after discount = 0.9x

Find the cost price after the landed cost:

Import tax = 5%

Price after import tax = (1 + 0.05)(0.9x)

Price after import tax = 0.945x

Find the cost price after other expenses:

Other expenses = 20% of the landed cost

Price after other expenses = (1 + 0.2)(0.945x)

Price after other expenses = 1.134x

Find the selling price:

Gain = 15%

Selling Price = (1 + 0.15)(1.134x)

Selling Price = 1.3041x

Find the markup:

Markup = 1.3041x - x

Markup = 0.3041x

Find the percentage markup:

Percentage markup = (0.3041x ÷ x) x 100

Percentage markup = 30.41%

Answer: 30.41%
