Calculate the resistance of a copper wire 1.0km long and 0.05mm diameter if the resistivity of copper is 1.7x10 to the power -8 ohms m

Given ;

  • l = 1 km => 1000m
  • d = 0.05 mm => 0.005 cm => r = 0.0025 cm
  • ρ(resistivity) = 1.7 × 10^-8

Therefore R = ρ ( l / A )

R =

  • 1.7 × 10^-8 × 1000 / 25 × 10^-4
  • 1.7 × 10^-4 × 10³ / 25
  • 1.7 × 10 / 25
  • 17 / 25
  • = 0.68 Ω

Thus the resistance = 0.68 Ω
