but it can happen

The geometry of the universe is, at least on a very large scale, elliptic. In a closed universe, gravity eventually stops the expansion of the universe, after which it starts to contract until all matter in the universe collapses to a point, a finalsingularity termed the "Big Crunch", the opposite of the Big Bang.

Yes, it can be if there the fundament forces of nature stopped working or in fundamental particles of nature specially the bosons disappeared or if fermions got some how bombared with each other. but then also I think this universe is too big that if this also happens this would take entirely double the age of the universe to completely destory
