The inquiry is unanswerable.
English has no chance to get of disambiguating references of pronouns like 'he' and 'she' when there is more than one conceivable precursor.
To clear up what is implied the sentence must be expressed in an unexpected way
From the announcement, it is difficult to state which of the two male is smashed.
To make it express, you compose it along these lines,
A father beats up his son because he (the father) was drunk
Or
A father beats up his son because he (the son) was drunk.
