The poet talks about the deep realities of the life, which is not smooth and flawless. He knows the hard truth of life is that everyone’s life is full of troubles; the trouble which comes with different circumstances.

But one should not give up; one must keep one’s will power strong and unconquered by anyone. One must look for the solutions for overcoming the troubles of the life. These waves of waves will try to make one weak, blood headed or even shake to the extent that the feelings of horror will shower upon the person, but what is important at this stage is to feel strong, keep the head up and fight with such troubles. The fate and destiny will try to scare but it is important to stay unafraid. If one tends to keep such a strong faith in oneself, then nothing can conquer and one can win over anything and everything in life.

The author claims his environment to be a negative and dark place. Author is implying that his life is being surrounded by the darkness. Every aspect of his life is like the ‘pit’ or hell. However, he expresses his story of how he overcame his troubles and how he feels that nothing can get in his way anymore. He also thinks whatever god has done; it may be filled with darkness, but he still feels thankful to God because his soul cannot be ruled by anyone. It is as independent just like his thoughts.

he poet is describing how he had a hard life. He has encountered many troubles and circumstances, but has never given up even after being pushed up by these evil troubles. After his life has been beaten down, he still feels strong and hopeful. The poet is implying that he has been beaten down, but is still capable and full of strength to conquer the troubles of the life ahead of him.

Now the Author explains that how he differentiates the fact that there will be more circumstances in the future that he cannot prevent from happening. However, the past troubled years has prepared the individual for the future ones. The approaching years must stand and be ready to find the person unafraid and ready to overcome the hardships that the forth comings will provide.

Now the Author explains about how a person is the controller of his own life. Whatever he encounter with such problems or troubles or such circumstances in his life, or whatever life throws at him, he knows that he is the ‘captain of their soul;’ and he can manage his own life. Just like the captain of a ship, he feels that his life is a big ship sailing through the waves of different circumstances and troubles. Life is a struggle and is not absolute.

However, with the authority that he has over his own life, he can proceed on the road of his choice. He is the master of his fate, and the captain of his soul. He is filled with the feeling that he can rule his own life and fight with all worries.

The movie titled "Invictus" refers to this very poem throughout the film. It is also read within "The Capture of the Green River Killer", and the words of "Invictus" were the last words spoken by Timothy McVeigh.
