can anybody tell why we use only sand paper before burning magnesium ribbon why sand paper is use? ​

Like rusting in case of iron, with magnesium, the oxide layer forms a white coating on the outside of the metal that will slow down or interfere with the burning process. Rubbing with sand paper helps to remove this oxide layer due to which burning speeds up.

Only sand paper is used for this purpose because it scratches off the oxide layer of magnesium quite easily as compared to other such things...It is easy to get and works very effectively and efficiently.....

Sand paper removes the oxide layer in case of it is formed on the surface of Mg. Mg is a reactive metal and in presence of Oxygen it forms MgO layer on its surface. In order to make it sure that the burning is effective sans paper is used
