In a compound elements are in the fixed ratio by mass as in H2O mass of hydrogen is 2as I H weighs 1 and mass of oxygen is 16 .ratio 2/16 that is 1:8 so everybody water molecule in this world is in ratio 1:8 by mass

¤ The Law of Definite Proportion states that in a chemical substances the elements are always present in a definite proportion by mass.
=>This Law is also known as Law of Constant Proportion.
=>The relative number and kinds of atoms are constant in a given compound. This postulate of Dalton’s atomic theory explains the Law of definite proportions.
=>Examples :
1. Salt, written as the chemical compound NaCl, is made up of atoms of Sodium (Na) and Chlorine (Cl).
The exact same proportions of sodium and chlorine must always be combined in order for salt to be created.
2. Sulfuric acid is made up of the individual elements of hydrogen, sulphur, and oxygen. The chemical compound is written H2SO4. The same proportions of hydrogen, sulphur, and oxygen must be combined to create sulfuric acid.
