Hello Patil,

To understand the concept of MOT, you have to understand Wave theory first. And you see, if You know, constructive interference and destructive interference, If two orbitals (valence shell) of individual Oxygen atoms form More constructive interference than Destructive interference. And thus we calculate how many bonding and anti bonding electrons participate in the bond formation. And we actually substract the antibonding from bonding pair of electrons and here we also get bond order,(nothing but the number of bond that is, single bond or double bond or triple bond). Bond order can also be fractional as in case of Ozone molecule O3. Since it shows resonance, that is, it's electrons are shared between two bonds and the molecula might show more than one possible structure.

So you see Dear Patil, this is how we relate Chemistry with Physics. And thus we can understand better by making relations and Learn easily by making short forms.

HEY THERE HERE IS YOUR ANSWER

______________________________

O2 molecule contains 16 electrons

and the electronic configuration is

KK [sigma(2px)]^2 [pi (2py)]^2= [pi (2pz)]^2 [pi*(2py)]^1= [pi*(2pz)]^1

KK stands for neutralisation of bonding and antibonding

we considered x as internuclear axis

The bond order of O2 is
1/2 (bonding electrons -anti bonding electrons)
=1/2 (6-4) =2

and O2 is paramagnetic since it contains 2 unpaired electrons

Thanks

kevinujunioroy492d: your answer is googled
Coeus: Get lost Buddy.
Coeus: But your answer is already wrong dude. Check the calculations again.
Coeus: 6 minus 4 is 2 and half of it is 1, but you wrote it 2.
Coeus: So it is completely wrong. Start studying Dude.
kevinujunioroy492d: lol
kevinujunioroy492d: you reported just for a single mistake
Coeus: Yeah. And the bond order is also wrong. Totally wrong everything.
kevinujunioroy492d: bond order is right i.e 2
kevinujunioroy492d: just calculation is a bit wrong
