Lignin is the second most prevalent biopolymer after cellulose (both of which are present in plant cell walls). Lignins are cross-linked phenolic polymers but do not have a precise molecular formula. Importantly, it acts as a structural material in the support tissues of vascular plants and some algae. Lignin lends rigidity to plants and does not rot easily. It strengthens wood in vascular plants.

Lignin is a class of complex organic polymersthat form important structural materials in the support tissues of vascular plants and some algae.[1] Lignins are particularly important in the formation of cell walls, especially in woodand bark, because they lend rigidity and do not rot easily. Chemically, lignins are cross-linked phenolic polymers.[
