1. using canvas of the image
canvas is the area where you work, you can select canvas size in image menu and background in canvas extension color box.
2. painting with colour
now you can colour in the canvas using eyedropper and chose a colour. you can choose colour from colour pallet. you can use the brush tool for making stroke , you can select brush tool using options bar , you can choose the style by clicking a down arrow button beside brush tool
3. changing brightness and contrast
you can adjust colour brightness of image by adjustment option and click on brightness/contrast . you can adjust the brightness and contrast using the slider.
4. drawing shapes
create new image , enter dimensions in the new dialog box and click on ok . select the rectangle tool using foreground color and select a color . select the required shape
