‘The Man on the Train’ is a story written by American writer, Alex Haley (1921 – 1992).

It is the true story of Alex Haley’s father – Simon Haley, who had to struggle through school, because of poverty. After completing Senior High School, he managed to join a land-grant school and fared badly in his studies, trying to make ends meet. But as luck would have it, he got a chance to work for The Pullman Railroad Company as a porter, when he happened to meet a retired publishing executive who sponsored his books, tuition and boarding, enabling him to complete his studies and move on to higher studies.
