It basically relates angular positions of an unlensed source , the image , the Einstein bending angle of light ,the angular diameter lens-source and observer-source distances.

USE-

This equation helps us in studying gravitational lensing in a strong gravitational field.

More \: to \: know :

1) Einstein predicted that light should be bent by gravity, and Sir Arthur Eddington led an expedition to photograph the 1919 total eclipse of the sun. The photographs he took revealed stars whose light had passed near the sun, and their positions showed that the light had been bent exactly as Einstein had predicted.

2) Gravitational deflection of light or Einstein bending angle of light states that -when light travels through spacetime, it should be warped and curved that is light should dip and curve in the presence of massive objects. This bending of light is caused by gravity .

Hope that I am able to make you understand Virbhadra–Ellis lens equation.
