Answer:

Be aggressive: This has already been said, but if you see someone, even if they have better gear, take the fight. Sure, you may not win, but it is really easy to run away in this game and having experience on how to deal with better-looted players will help you in the endgame.

Loot in high traffic areas: Once again, pretty obvious, but whenever I load into a game, the first thing I do is to check the map, see where the best/closest loot area is, and run there. I tend to skip and crates/small shacks (unless they have something amazing) and just rush to the location I want to go to. This is because if you can quickly loot and take over a good loot spot, like the Bunker/Police Station/Mansion quickly, you will end up with good loot and people will flock there looking for action, which leads to more kills.

Understand the game: This is a bit of a complex strategy that is hard to explain, but I will do my best here. First, you need to remember that many players are pretty bad and don't use much thought in this game. Understanding where players will be mid game is what will lead you to more kills during games. When you look at the map, try to think where players would go from big areas, rather than where they were. Don't stay in one spot during mid-game, instead, check areas where players who are coming into the circle might be, like areas of the zone closest to the mansion because people around there would be coming in from that direction. This mostly comes from experience with the game.

Luck: Honestly, high kill games mostly come down to luck. I have had games where I had a Mosin, 6 people came to me one after the other, and each of them died with one shot; or games where I get an M249 and other great loot but don't run into anyone until the end-game. Luck is generally a big part of Battle Royale games and there isn't much you can do about it.
