some elements like noble gases neon can stay independtly. But not all ,it is possible for a very short time that an atom stay independently because after combining they release energy and get stable.

it means an atom is very unstable when it is in independent state but so they combine with other atoms to form molecule and compound

it is for only short time when their is gaining and loss of electrons from different from each other. It forms matter when they unite each other
