Can combustion take place in the absence of air or oxygen?

oxygen support combustion and if there is no oxygen combustion would not occur at all
You can simply test this out...
1. Take a candle and light it up.
2. Now put a glass over it and observe....
You will notice that flame going off as the connection between the FLAMES and OXYGEN will be cut off. The candle will remains lighten up only till all the oxygen in the glass will be taken up.
