Can earthworms or any other insect can be used in the experiment to show that 'CO2 is given out during respiration'

well first let me explain the role of KOH pallets and KOH solution .
When we are experimenting the process of evolution of CO2 gas during respiration we use KOH so that is absorbs CO2 gas and decreases pressure in the flask and thus the water in the beaker filled with water on the other end of the flask will rise . Due to pressure difference . And since KOH absorbs CO2 gas we can conclude that CO2 gas is given out during respiration'.
(by seeing the rise in the water level in the flask )
coming back to the topic we can use earthworms or any other insect but by doing so we suffocate the living organism( which is inhuman) and even when the oxygen level decreases in the flask the rate of breathing of earthworms or other insect will also decrease hence the efficiency through which CO2 being produced considerably decreases . And thus the change in water level is very less or negligible and its not possible to have many earthworms or insects in one beaker and not too convenient to (as they tend to move around) and thus its very easy to use sprouted grains or germinating seeds
Hope this helped u :-)
