There are four main subjects for IAS exams:

  1. English,
  2. Indian languages,
  3. Essay, and
  4. General studies.

Other then these, you have to choose one optional subject. It can be from a wide variety of subjects like Mathematics, Medical studies, Economics, Hindi, etc. You can opt for any of these and not necessarily Mathematics.

So Mathematics is not quite necessary for exams but will help you if you are good in Mathematics.
