Corporal Turnbull

Corporal Turnbull was a young man, but he was not a man to be trifled with. He had come back from Dunkirk with all his equipment correct and accounted for. He kept his kitten in his pocket. He was admired by the trainee soldiers as their hero, and they used to tell each other that he was so tough that you could hammer nails into him without his noticing it.

Private Quelch

Private Quelch was a lanky, stooping, frowning man. He wore horn-rimmed spectacles. Everyone called him the Professor as he loved showing off his knowledge and presenting himself as superior to others.

Sergeant

Sergeant, a man as dark and sun-dried as raisins, wearing North-West Frontier ribbons, was a simple man. He got impressed with the Professor’s shallow knowledge, and could not punish him for his impudence.
