In the past, books were available only as manuscripts, written on palm leaves, papyrus, or vellum. They were fragile, expensive, and could not be read easily.

Once the print revolution occurred, the markets were flooded with cheap printed books which could be afforded by all. Literate people bought these books, and started reading them for themselves and out loud for the illiterate, at social gatherings, taverns, and other places.

Also, different churches set up schools in villages, carrying literacy to peasants and artisans. Thus, literacy and schools spread in European countries.

This growth of a reading or literate population along with the print revolution caused the virtual reading mania.
