Montmerency is not portrayed as a mere dog. He is one of the most important part of the journey. He is potrayed as the root cause of all mischief.

Montmorency is jerome's pet. He is a fox terrior and is taken along on the trip by the three friends. Montmorency is called an ‘angel' sent to earth by the author. However he is exactly the opposite of an angel. He loved to be perfect nuisance for others.J thinks he might not survive long. He is quite a mischievious dog. The author had to pay for the chickens killed by him. He also had to drag him out of umpteen many street fights with other dogs. There was a noble expression on the dog's face as if he seemed to be too pure for the profane world he inhabited that could bring tears into the eyes of pious old ladies and gentlemen.

Montmotency is also a proud dog. He does not eat food if it doesn't taste good. He is eager about the things happening around him. He was a born troubleshooter and did not need any encouragement for causing trouble to others. He disturbs the three friends at the time of packing and continues his doings on the boat trip as well.

Hope this helps.
