cortex is called as the casparian strips, around all the cell walls except those facing towards the axis and the surface of the root or stem.  the endodermis with its casparian strips may function in regulating the flow of water between outer tissues and the vascular cylinder at the center .

Casparian strip is a thin band of suberin or lignin like deposition and is present in the radial and transverse walls of the endodermis. Casparian strip has the significance as it prevents water and nutrients taken up by the root entering the stele via the apoplast.
