IIT stands for Indian istitute of technology. IIT are autonomous public institutes that provide higher education. They are governed By the institutes of technology act 1961 Which has declared them As institutions of national importance. The institutes of technology act 1961, Lists 23 institutes. The union HRD minister is the ex-official chairperson of IIT council. As of 2017, the total number of seats in all IIT's is 11,032.
The IIT's receive comparatively higher grants than other engineering Colleges in India. While the total government funding to most other engineering colleges is around 10-20 crores, per year the amount varies between 90 crores- 130 crores per year for each IIT.
