Two values of spin quantum numbers i.e.+1/2 and -1/2 represent the orientation of spin of the electron. Electrons behave as they were tiny charges spheres spinning around an axis. This spining gives rise to a tiny magnetic field. Since, spin angular momentum of the electron is a vector quantity that can have two orientations relative to the chosen axis which are called two spin states of the electrons as +1/2 or –1/2.

The total spin of a orbital is zero because every sub shells degenerate orbital can have maximumly of 2 electron so if we add then the spin quntam number will be zero
