I shall only talk of our neibhourhood - within the Milky Way - like closer to home. Given that there are an estimated 100 billion stars within our galaxy, even if just one percent of them have Earth-sized planets around them, it’s not a far-fetched thought that there may be thousands of planets that are populated with 'life'.* There may be advanced civilizations on some planets while on other planets, life may just be evolving. Scientists just do not know - and it certainly is not for want of trying.

In 1977, NASA launched Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 missions; both spacecraft were carrying golden 'records' containing greetings from Earth in 55 languages alongside pictures, sounds, and a galactic map giving directions to Earth. This was humanity’s postcard to any ‘potential civilisations’ in the Galaxy. Both the spacecraft are now cruising in interstellar space, beyond the solar system. Voyager I is expected to pass by a star Gliese-445 in about 40,000 years.
