Explanation:

S phase or synthesis phase deals with replication of DNA .If DNA replication does not occur in the S  phase then G2 checkpoints that present in the border of G2 and M phase will not permit the cell to enter into mitotic phase.

          Mitosis helps in the distribution of replicated chromosome in the nucleus of newly formed daughter cells.This phenomenon will not occur without DNA replication in the S phase.
