Photosynthesis is the process by which sunlight is used as the source of energy to convert carbon dioxide, nutrients in the soil and chlorophyll in the leaves, into glucose, which is a type of sugar, as food for plants.
However, a family of non - green plants, known as fungi does not produce their own food because they lack one important ingredient: chlorophyll. Fungi do not have chlorophyll. Therefore, no amount of sunlight can help them convert it into the energy need to produce food for themselves.
To survive without chlorophyll, these fungi extract the required nutrients by feeding on parasites, such as dead bugs, decomposing earthworms and other dead insects found in the soil. Since nature has already done most of the decomposing, these fungi simply absorb the nutrients directly from the soil into their bodies to keep their body functioning. This process
is also known as hetero tropic, which means: to depend on other animals for their own energy intake.
