The real reason is due to the definition of the fraction itself, which is a representation of parts of a total which must be the same size. When you add or subtract fractions, you can't express the result as a fraction if you do not divide the total into equal parts.
Why can we multiply the numerators and denominators of fractions but we can't do the same when adding fractions? ... A fraction becomes 2/3 when 1 is added to both, its numerator and denominator .And, it becomes 1/2 when 1 is subtracted from both the numerator and denominator.
