Yes,we can call the uprising of 1857 the first war of  Indian Independence because for the first time people stood against the British rule.It was for the first time people felt a sense of belonging towards their own country and felt a sense of national consciousness.Revolt laid the foundation of the future freedom struggle.It marked the unity of Hindus and Muslims.It shooked the British rule in India who brought about dramatic changes in the administration there after.It raised the consciousness of the people against the oppresive British policies.

(1) the revolt had the people's support behind it, that is why it had spread so suddenly. (2) the Hindus and Muslims fought together against Britishers , as they were inspired with nationalist feelings.(3) the people from all walks of life supported the revolting soldiers as well as the rulers to throw the British rule out of their country.
